The Old Whole Foods at Idylwood Plaza Now Opens at 7 a.m., and Route 7 Stays Up Until 3

Whole Foods Market left Idylwood Plaza in February 2025 and moved down Route 7 to Falls Church City. No single tenant replaced it. The storefront has been subdivided into a smaller grocery and three fast-casual suites at a center owned by Federal Realty.

Add the openings a few blocks east at Tysons Station, which Federal Realty also owns, and the result is a corridor organized around short stops and long hours. On one storefront, the earliest posted opening is 7 a.m. At Tysons Station, the latest posted close is 3 a.m.

How one storefront became four businesses

The FFXnow coverage from this summer counted four new tenants moving into the former Whole Foods, with one more suite left over. Here is how the old space is divided as of this month:

  • Lidl takes 23,485 square feet, which makes it the clear anchor of the new layout.
  • Qdoba Mexican Eats is open and taking online orders at 7511 Leesburg Pike.
  • South Block, the juice and acai bowl chain, has a suite of roughly 1,500 square feet.
  • Potbelly has one of the newly created suites, and Federal Realty says the sandwich shop hopes to open by the end of 2026.
  • One 1,181-square-foot suite is the only vacancy left in an otherwise fully leased center.

The grocery piece came back sooner than planned. Federal Realty had expected a replacement grocer in late 2026. Lidl opened on August 12 instead. It is the German chain's 12th store in Fairfax County, which puts it level with its rival Aldi in the county. Lidl has run its U.S. headquarters from Arlington since 2015. According to the Lidl press release, the store has an in-house bakery with bread and pastries baked all day, Wednesday weekly deals, and a Friday-to-Sunday "Weekend Super Sale" on six items. The aisles also carry kitchenware, home décor and fitness gear.

A Lidl spokesperson told FFXnow that the company looks for "convenient, accessible locations that can support high traffic volume daily." That emphasis on daily traffic explains the rest of the layout. The plaza's other new tenants are places for a ten-minute stop, not a weekly shopping trip.

Smoothies at one end, burritos at the other

South Block has a local story. Amir Mostafavi, a McLean High School graduate, started it with a single shop in Clarendon in 2011. FFXnow reported that the Idylwood location is the chain's 27th overall and 17th in Virginia, a few months after its Burke opening. The menu matches its other shops: smoothies, juices, acai and smoothie bowls, and avocado or banana almond toast. Next, the chain is building at Fairfax Corner and Kingstowne, and both are likely to open in the first half of 2027.

Qdoba's posted hours push the old Whole Foods space past the usual dinner rush. The counter opens at 7 a.m. on weekdays and stays open until 11 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. With Potbelly expected before the year ends, the plaza will have a sandwich option next to the burritos and bowls.

The same landlord, a few blocks east, stays open later

Idylwood Plaza explains only half of the change. Federal Realty also owns Tysons Station, the shopping center anchored by Trader Joe's on Leesburg Pike in Pimmit Hills, and that center is fully leased too. Nash & Smashed, a smash-burger and fried-chicken restaurant, soft-launched there in early September and held its grand opening on October 24.

The chain's chief operating officer, Lamaan Malik, gave FFXnow a plain reason for picking the site:

"That place lacked a proper fried chicken and smashed burger [restaurant], and that's why we decided to open."

Founder Zayan Abbasi opened the first Nash & Smashed in Manassas in 2024. The Pimmit Hills restaurant is the chain's 30th location and its third in Fairfax County, after Reston and Lorton. The menu has Classic Bull smashed burgers, Nashville-style hot chicken sandwiches, tenders, wings, milkshakes and a few cheesecakes, including blueberry lemon and turtle. Malik told the outlet that none of the food is frozen and that ingredients come from local suppliers.

Its hours are what make the corridor run late. Nash & Smashed's location page lists 11 a.m. to 2 a.m. Sunday through Thursday and 11 a.m. to 3 a.m. on Friday and Saturday. It also joins a long list of quick food already at Tysons Station: Crisp & Juicy for Peruvian chicken, Ledo Pizza, Java Loco, Blazin' Chicken and Gyro, China King, Juice Time and Papa Kanafa.

Here are the posted hours along this stretch, side by side:

Stop Center Earliest opening Latest close
Lidl Idylwood Plaza 8 a.m. daily 9 p.m. daily
Qdoba Mexican Eats Idylwood Plaza 7 a.m. Mon to Fri, 8 a.m. Sat and Sun 10 p.m. Sun to Thu, 11 p.m. Fri and Sat
Nash & Smashed Tysons Station 11 a.m. daily 2 a.m. Sun to Thu, 3 a.m. Fri and Sat

West on Route 7, a first for Virginia

Going the other way, toward Falls Church City, German Doner Kebab opened its first Virginia restaurant at 7121b Leesburg Pike, Suite R2, with a grand opening on October 3. By October 7, the Falls Church Independent listed it as open. The chain has more than 170 locations worldwide. As FFXnow pointed out, doner kebabs are a staple in Germany but still uncommon in Northern Virginia.

Kebabs come wrapped or on toasted sesame waffle bread, with lettuce, tomato, onion and red cabbage, plus yogurt, garlic or spicy sauce. There is also an American-style version called the Doner Krunch Burger, served on a bun with Doritos and cheese sauce.

Dog owners have a newer stop too. Woof Gang Bakery & Grooming is open at 7504 Leesburg Pike, Suite 9A, in the Pimmit Hills shopping center, and grooming appointments can be booked from its location page.

December at the library, and the trail link planned next door

The corridor's main community event this season isn't at a shopping center. Tysons-Pimmit Regional Library, at 7584 Leesburg Pike, has two free December dates on the Fairfax County library calendar:

  1. Saturday, December 12, 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The Holiday Open House, with caroling by the Marshall High School Statesman Singers and a winter craft.
  2. Sunday, December 20, 3 to 4 p.m. A family-friendly holiday concert by the Interchangeable String Quartet.

The block beside the library is also set to change. In October 2025, the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors approved a plan to replace two office buildings at 7600 Leesburg Pike with 137 townhomes. FFXnow reported that the approved plan extends Kilgore Road to a Route 7 service road and reserves right-of-way along Route 7 for a 10-foot trail and possible bus rapid transit. It also adds a pedestrian connection to the trails around the library and links onsite park space to the Tysons Pimmit Park trail network.

Questions about how a re-tenanted shopping center or a new trail plan affects the homes around it are part of the conversations we have every week in Idylwood and Pimmit Hills.
