Things to Do in Great Falls VA This Fall: Your 2026 Guide

"As of 9/29/26, until further notice, the public restrooms and drinking water systems are closed until further notice."

That is the alert the National Park Service posted for Great Falls Park on September 29, 2026. It gives no cause and no reopening date. Visitors are directed to portable toilets in the Main Parking Lot and at the junction of Old Carriage Road Trail and Matildaville Trail. The same page lists the Aid Box rock climbing area as temporarily closed after a recent rock topple.

The park that gave the town its name will be harder to visit than usual for at least part of peak leaf season. The good news is the rest of Great Falls has an unusually full fall calendar. Colvin Run Mill is pressing cider on six dates in October. The Village Field has a free one-time concert. Riverbend Park and Turner Farm have programs running into late November. There are also two newer restaurants on Georgetown Pike and Seneca Road for dinner afterward. Without a drinking fountain at the park, these local options are this year's easy fall plan.

The park was already a hard Saturday before the water went off

Great Falls Park has always had a bottleneck at the gate. The park's planning guidance warns of big crowds and delays on pleasant weekends and holidays. It says the line of cars can start forming around 10:30 to 11:00 a.m., with waits of up to 45 minutes to an hour. When the lots fill, the entrance at Georgetown Pike and Old Dominion Drive closes temporarily and reopens "as soon as space becomes available." For parking updates, the park points visitors to the Visitor Center at 703-757-3101.

Put the queue together with the closures, and a family that arrives at 11 a.m. on a clear October Saturday could wait close to an hour to park. Then they'd hike with no drinking water on site and only portable toilets. The NPS hours page lists the Visitor Center as open daily from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. It also lists the courtyard snack bar as typically open weekends from noon to 5:00 p.m. That page was last updated in April, so call ahead before counting on either.

None of this makes the overlooks less worth seeing. It does mean a fall weekend built around the park now takes planning, and the town's other options take very little.

Colvin Run Mill has the season's most hands-on Saturday

The best substitute for a morning at the falls may be a morning at the mill. Colvin Run Mill, at 10017 Colvin Run Road, has cider-press sessions on October 10, 11, 17, 24, 25 and 31, 2026. Each group can have up to eight people. You bring about 100 apples and your own containers, and you leave with roughly two gallons of cider.

The arithmetic matters when you shop. A hundred apples is more than a bag from the store, so plan the stop before the session, not on the way.

As the month goes on, the mill shifts from daytime to after dark. "Virginia Hauntings – Legends & Lore" lantern tours run October 23 and 24, with several evening start times. That weekend overlaps with the Saturday, October 24 cider session. One site can cover a whole day, with cider pressing earlier and a lantern tour that evening.

Riverbend and Turner Farm carry the outdoors past October

For leaves and the Potomac without the federal-park queue, Riverbend Park at 8700 Potomac Hills Street has a fall lineup of its own. It includes an Autumn Leaves Hike and Craft on October 24, Halloween in the Hollows on October 31, and an all-ages Family Fun Friday on November 27. With the leaf hike landing on the same Saturday as the mill's lantern tours, October 24 is the most crowded day on the local calendar.

Turner Farm, at 925 Springvale Road, takes the season into the evening. Its Roll-Top Observatory lists a Night Sky Tour on November 18 from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. By mid-November it's fully dark by then, which is the point of an observatory program.

Then there's the Great Falls Farmers Market, which runs year-round every Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at 756 Walker Road. It closes right around when the park's queue usually peaks. That makes the market and an afternoon cider session an easy Saturday pairing.

The Village Field gets the season's biggest free night

The one event this fall that won't come around again is the Celebrate Great Falls 250 Festival. The Celebrate Great Falls Foundation bills it as a "one-time only special event." It runs October 17 from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. on the Great Falls Village Field behind the Post Office. The foundation's events calendar lists the date as October 17, 2026. Local bands Hello Cleveland and Radio Vinyl will play a big stage set up in front of the big tree. Smoking Kow BBQ and Chick-fil-A will run food trucks. The festival is free. The foundation asks people to bring blankets or lawn chairs and notes that pets and alcohol aren't allowed on the field.

Two weeks later, the foundation's Halloween Spooktacular moves to the Village Centre Green on October 31. A dog parade and costume contest run from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m., followed by trick-or-treating from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Riverbend's Halloween in the Hollows and the mill's last cider session fall on the same day. That gives Halloween 2026 a full daytime schedule in Great Falls before trick-or-treating begins.

Great Falls Friends & Neighbors has two dates on the books as well. On Thursday, October 8, the club holds an All-Club Wine 101 evening at Krop's Crops, 11110 VA-193, with a hayride, barbecue, s'mores and a wine tasting. The club president's message says guests and plus-ones are welcome. A New Member Reception follows on Wednesday, November 4, from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. at the Great Falls Grange.

Dinner afterward, on Georgetown Pike and Seneca Road

A fall day that starts at the mill or the Village Field now has two newer places to end. Great Falls Lodge Bar and Grill, at 9835 Georgetown Pike in Great Falls Center, reached its soft launch after a delay. Owner and chef Neel Kamal told FFXnow that Fairfax County's permitting and inspection process "took longer than expected." The soft launch was set for September 7. It's the first Virginia location of a concept that began with Urbana Lodge and Clarks Lodge in Maryland. FFXnow reported that the plan was to open first for dinner service from 3:00 to 10:00 p.m. and add lunch and happy hours later. The planned menu blends classic American bar food with Asian flavors. FFXnow noted that the soft-opening menu leans Western, with burgers, flatbreads, baby back ribs, fish and chips, Maryland crab cakes and jambalaya. The restaurant's own site says it's serving a curated soft-launch menu and expects to offer its full dining experience in October. That means the menu may change during the same weeks as the mill's cider dates.

The Cellar on Seneca, a wine bistro, is in the former BRX American Bistro space at 1025 Seneca Road, Suite I. The Great Falls Connection profiled the project in July ahead of a planned summer opening. The restaurant's site now says "Now Open" and links to reservations and online ordering.

For mornings, there's Toastique at 9891 Georgetown Pike in Great Falls Center. FFXnow reported in January that it planned a grand opening for January 24. Its location page now lists hours and online ordering. It's a few doors from the Lodge, so one shopping center covers breakfast and dinner on a Village Field day.
